- How many steps or how many feet of railing
- Whether it's at a house, apartment building or business
- Whether you want it painted after (fresh welds rust if left bare)
Good to know
If a railing moves when you lean on it, keep people off those steps until it's fixed. Stair and porch railings have height and spacing rules in the building code, so ask the welder or your city's building department what applies if you're replacing a whole section.
Around Springfield
Older Springfield neighborhoods such as Rountree, Phelps Grove and the Midtown streets have many steel porch and stair railings that rust at the base. Commercial Street and other older districts may have rules for visible changes.
Questions
Railing repair: common questions
Q01Can a rusted railing be saved?
Often the rusted part, usually the bottom of the posts, can be cut out and replaced. If the rust is everywhere, the welder may suggest a new section.
Q02Do you work on apartment and business railings?
Yes. Say so when you call so the welder can plan for access and any building rules.
Q03How much will it cost?
The welder sets the price. Sending a request is free.
Q04Can a wobbly railing be fixed without replacing it?
Often. Loose bases, cracked welds and broken balusters can usually be repaired in place. If the posts or rails are rusted through in many spots, a new section may make more sense.
Q05Will the repair rust?
Bare steel rusts, including fresh welds. Ask the welder whether primer and paint are included or whether you should paint the repair yourself.
Q06Do I need a permit to replace a railing?
It depends on your city and the size of the job. Your city's building department, or Greene or Christian County for unincorporated areas, can tell you what applies.
